On Friday, 8th July, Wlsa Malawi, with support from UN Women, facilitated a workshop for Malawi’s 32 female members of parliament (MP’s), to assist them to popularize, within their constituencies, three gender related laws, namely the Gender Equality Act, The Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act and the Trafficking in Persons Act. The laws are technical in language and nature and require simplifying into laymans language for everyone to understand. By popularizing the laws, women and children will have increased access to justice as they will be more aware of their rights and where to seek recourse.
Furthermore, the MP’s visibility in their respective constituencies will also be raised. Raising their visibility as to the progress of developments in their areas will not only assist in retaining them during the next elections in 2019 but to also increase the number of women who may be elected in other constituencies.
